Indigenous Engagement

We are committed to respectful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to recognising the importance of culture, identity and community within the environments we serve. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we operate and pay our respects to Elders past and present.

Our Approach to Indigenous Engagement

Our approach is grounded in respectful relationships and practical action. We support Indigenous economic participation through procurement from approved Indigenous suppliers and social enterprises where appropriate. We also acknowledge and celebrate Indigenous culture within our organisation, including the use of Indigenous artwork on our uniforms during NAIDOC Week as a visible sign of recognition and respect.

As our business continues to evolve, we are committed to strengthening our engagement in ways that are informed, considered and aligned with our values. We recognise that meaningful engagement requires listening, learning and building long-term relationships over time.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan

In 2024, we launched our inaugural Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan, and formally endorsed by Reconciliation Australia. Led by our senior leadership team, the RAP focuses on practical actions across relationships, respect, and opportunities — including Indigenous procurement, cultural awareness, and inclusive recruitment.

We commissioned original Aboriginal artwork for our RAP — Ngata monda gumina, meaning “To shield community.” Created by Bayadherra, the artwork connects NPS’s security role with the cultural values of protection, collaboration, and respect. The central shield represents our commitment to community safety, while the yarning circles reflect the relationships we’re building with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities where we work.

During NAIDOC Week, our officers wear uniforms featuring Indigenous artwork at client sites.

Our key objectives in implementing our RAP include:

  • Increase understanding, value and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, knowledge and rights of our staff through cultural learning.
  • Build respect and awareness of cultures and histories by celebrating NAIDOC Week.
  • Improve employment outcomes by increasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander recruitment, retention and professional development.
  • Continue to increase our supplier diversity and procurement practices to support improved economic and social outcomes.
